So I picked this thing up from Marine Depot a couple months ago for 178.00. It is the el cheapo extruded model that is rated for 80 gallons or 50 gallons heavily stocked. It seems to be well made.

The skimmer doesn't come with a gate valve but it isn't the old adjustable height riser tube either. Instead there is a T with a riser pipe inserted in the top that acts like a valve. The end that inserts into the T is cut at an angle so as you twist it the longer side will begin to block the outlet side of the T and restrict the flow just like a valve. Not as good as a valve but pretty slick idea. It also comes with a length of pipe and a elbow so the outflow can be quietly directed back into the sump.

The collection cup has the same union disconnect as the "real" ERs, a third of a turn on the ring and lift the cup about half an inch and it's out. It uses a Sedra 2000 pump with the pin wheel and is pretty damn quiet.

I have ran it for a couple months on the 105 and even now that i am pretty well stocked with fish this thing easily keeps up. Once I adjusted the air flow on set up I haven't had to touch the thing (other than emptying the collection cup a couple times a week). The skimmate is the same thick brown goo you expct to see from a good skimmer. In my case I never had to adjust the water level, it was ballpark with the outflow wide open. I wouldn't hesitate to run one of these on a heavily stocked 75 despite Euroreef's rating.

I had a deal on a fully modded ASM G4 lamd in my lap so I will be going from a little under powered skimmer to over kill in a few days.

My pump is really quiet. Weird.

Adjust the air so the foam rises about half way up the collection cup seems to be the sweet spot.

i contacted euroreef a week ago and they said the noise is a known problem. something about the diameter of the impeller being too large. they said they'd send replacement parts but it's been a week now and nothing has shown up. will report the results when i get it fixed
